Bunsen

Privacy policy

Short version: no accounts, no tracking cookies, and your game history stays on your device. We only count anonymous events to see how the games are doing.

Who we are

Bunsen runs the daily science games at bunsen.games (“Bunsen”, “we”, “us”). For anything about your privacy, email hello@bunsen.games.

What we don’t collect

There are no accounts, so we never ask for your name, email address, age or password. We don’t sell data, and we don’t build profiles of who you are.

What stays on your device

The games save a few things in your browser’s local storage so they work the way you expect:

  • your progress on today’s puzzles and your past results
  • your stats and streaks
  • whether you’ve chosen light or dark mode, and whether you’ve seen the how-to

This is saved on your device only; we never receive your saved games. A few counts from your stats do travel with the anonymous events described below. You can delete what’s saved at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings; your stats and streaks will reset.

What we measure

To learn which games people enjoy and what to improve, we count anonymous events, such as a page being viewed, a game being started or finished (with the number of guesses, clues and reveals used), and the share or stats buttons being used. Game events also carry a few numbers from the stats on your device: how many games you’ve played, your current and best streak, and whether you’ve played before. Along with these we receive general technical details: browser and device type, screen size, time zone, the page that linked to us, an approximate country, and how fast the page loaded.

We use PostHog, hosted in the European Union, to count these events. It runs without cookies and without saving an identifier on your device, so it can’t recognise you from one visit to the next. Your IP address is used only to work out the approximate country and is not stored.

Hosting

The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks, and may keep short-lived logs for security. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Advertising

Bunsen doesn’t show ads yet. When it does, ad partners such as Google may use cookies to show and measure ads. Before that happens we’ll update this page and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent first.

Children

Bunsen is made for everyone, including students. Because there are no accounts and we don’t collect names or contact details, we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example in the UK, the EU or California), you have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, and to have it corrected or deleted. Because our measurements are anonymous and we can’t tell visitors apart, we usually hold nothing that identifies you, but you can always ask at hello@bunsen.games. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Changes

If this policy changes, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top. Significant changes, such as adding ads, will be made before they take effect.
